Hello,

Our little girl will be born in the week or so. She was diagnosed(prenatally) with Heterotaxy syndrome. She has multiple heart defects and some other organs are misplaced in her body. We are in the process of researching different supplemental insurance options to help elleviate the financial burden that will be associated with her condition. Please respond with ideas or options that have been found to be useful in our situtation.

Thank you

Travis

Hi, and congrats on the new baby girl! Before we had Kylie we signed up for Aflac, the ICUplan it is very cheap like $8.oo a month and that is for the whole family.
Where we knew Kylie was going to be staying there for a while (HLHS) we picked that plan, I know there are lots of supplemental insurances to pick and choose from. They paid us about $3500 for her 1st open heart and then about $1000 for her 2nd. Good Luck oh and hopefully they won't try and say it's pre-existing, because according to our agent, she said since Kylie wasn't born yet she wasn't considered a "real" person, because she didn't have a social security number yet. Hope you find something quick and Good Luck with your little one.

There have been some BIG changes to what is now available for certain supplemental plans (legally) in the state of Utah (Aflac, Colonial Life, Heritage, Etc). I know some of the plans I currently have you had to be enrolled by the end of February 2010 to be able to utilize them, as they are not be offered now, but since I have the plans they can't drop me either.

I think your best option is to call a licensed insurance agent that deals with supplementary plans since they can answer the questions you have. Many of us that have current plans have something different from what is now being offered. I would not want to confuse you or give you false hopes.

The Agent that some of us on the group has used is Marty Ferguson (801) 548-0007 9678 S 700 E Ste 101 Sandy, UT 84070.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you in obtaining some type of supplementary insurance. I too had a Heterotaxy daughter and so I understand what you are facing.

It took several weeks to get our Aflac Ins set up. You need to do this IMMEDIATELY!! It's been a total lifesaver. I wish I'd signed up with other companies, too. Once baby's born, it's a pre-existing condition. You need to talk to an agent today.

We also have the ICU policy. There is a 28 day waiting period after the baby is born before the ICU policy will cover the baby. It's still worth it! Even one day in the ICU pays out enough to cover nearly 2 years of the premium. This has been a life-saver for us.

As long as she's not born yet, her condition is NOT pre-existing.

Do you have aflac at work? If not, I think you have to sign up using a credit union bank account. I'm not positive. They auto-withdraw the premiums from your account or pre-paycheck.

This is our agent. Tell him about your situation and that you'll need to rush the paperwork. Seriously, you need to call people today. It takes time to get things set up on their end.

Also, keep in mind that Aflac's premiums are PER PAYCHECK, not per month.

I agree with not delaying anytime in making contact to see what is available.

However, like I mentioned there have been some significant changes legally in the State of Utah to do with Supplemental Insurance. After Feb 15, 2010 any new supplemental insurance plans have to be administered through an offering from an employer and payments can only come through payroll deduction. You can no longer just obtain it on your own/individual plan like I did with my American Heritage Plan through Allstate that I had back in 2006 when I had my youngest . . .had I not dropped it and kept the premiums up then they could not drop me because it would be existing. For those that have a current individual plan that are paying premiums on your own, they can not drop you unless premiums are not received. Once that happens they can drop you and you will be ineligible for individual coverage again.

I even called Rainsplats contact to make sure I understood the changes correctly as I don't want to pass the wrong info. The licensed insurance agent I talked with at that office was Matt and he said that YES what I understood was correct. If he has anyone wanting info about a supplementary insurance he will just refer you to the company (AFLAC, Etc.) that administers the plan, since he can not sell individual plans anymore. He can only help the existing individual administered plans. If your employer offers AFLAC or another type of Supplementary Insurance, then you might want to contact the agent they contract with ASAP

Good luck and I hope that answers questions to the new rules in the State of Utah on obtaining ALFAC and other Supplementary Issuances.
