My daughter has HLHS and just turned 1 year. It has been 6 months since she had the Glen done. We are noticing that at the base of the sternum is a bump that is getting begger as she grows and is growing more to the right of the incision scar. Her sternum has never been completely flat but it has gotten worse. Dr. Kaza wants to see her this week in clinic but the appointment is still up in the air depending on any emergencies or last minute changes to the surgery schedule. Has anyone had to go through this?

My son Noah has a sternum bump, and it too seemed to get bigger over time. It has been 6 years since he had his Fontan, and it is just now getting smaller as he gets older. I have asked the cardiologist about it many times, and the only way they said they could fix it, is to open him up and sand it down. However, it is a build up a calcium and bone, so her heart will actually be even more protected, as there is more bone built up in the area surrounding her heart! Like I said, it took awhile, but Noahs IS getting much smaller the older he gets, even though after surgery when he was younger it seemed to grow with him.

I hope this helps!!

If I were you I would have a quick check by the surgeon. My daughter had this twice and it was a sternal wire that had come loose and her body would form a cyst around it. It was a simple same day 15 min procedure to have it fixed. When I asked the ped. and the cardiologist about it, I was told it was her bone and nothing much they could do. Call your surgeon and have them check it out real quick for you.
