Well, I knew that this may be the best place ever to ask this question. We are looking at getting a secondary insurance for Kaidence. We have DMBA as her primary, but a secondary would be wonderful to help with her monthly prescription cost, co pays, medical equipment etc.

Because Kaidence was born healthy, we never even considered doing this. However, once the virus attacked her heart we started survival mode and of course that is never the thought of a parent whose child is dying. We had no warning about anything.

Have any of you looked into the same thing. I know that when applying for a primary insurance they cannot count Kaidence's condition as 'pre-existing' as long as there is not a lapse in being insured. However, I am not sure if the same thing applies for a secondary insurance. Anyone know?

I know that this may be expensive, but I am hoping that we would at least break even every month and then be better off on the months that we have procedures or hospitalizations. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

Shauntelle,

I hesitated to reply earlier since we had some thing in place already with dual insurances before Grant was born, but in our experience, it was pretty easy. You can contact any number of independent insurance agents and talk about additional policies. You can ask them about levels of coverage, but in our experience, because of the preexisting health condition, it had to be coverage for the entire family (and not just for Kaidence for example). This made the premiums higher, but what can you do right?! You will need to have a certificate from DMBA stating that Kaidence has continuous coverage to purchase the policy. We used two different agencies in Logan and it was helpful to have the dual coverage, though the monthly premiums were pretty pricey.

Now that we have moved to Idaho, I think every heart family ought to move here too! They have a state disability medicaid program that offers some additional coverage to your primary insurance with a reasonable premium. With Grant's list of diagnoses and care needs, he was qualified for the next two years which will be a lifesaver for us! So...worst case...move to Idaho! We would love the friends!

Good Luck!
