Hi Friends,

Can someone enlighten me on the Synagis shot process? I spent the better part of the morning sorting out the insurance side of it and now Grant has an appt. for his November dose on Thursday. After he was a miserable mess last week after a catchup round of vaccinations, I am a little nervous! Are we talking one shot in the thigh? Two shots in the thigh? Cranky baby for just a few minutes afterwards? or...my fear... a baby who is cranky and miserable for the next 48 hours (as was our result during the last round of vaccines!).

Grant had one dose last winter, but he was only a few days old and sedated, so it didn't mean much! Please let me know what to expect so I can plan for it! Thanks!

Alli

P.S. I hope I don't sound paranoid....not like a shot is really a big deal, but I have heard rumor that this one is the consistency of dried out peanut butter and therefore might be yucky!

My son had the series year one and two. I found that an hour before, if I gave him a dose of Advil he had little side-effect and was relatively happy throughout the day. I feel that the benefit out weighed the cost (both physically and monetary)! I believe the dose is based on weight, so the first year it was only one shot, by the end of the second year it consisted of two shots, very quickly. All together not a fun process but if it means not being hospitalized for RSV, worth it.

Kylie got them last year and is approved this year also. She had only 1 shot at a time. Makes me laugh when we get the bill for a $3500 vacine every single month.

You can have home health come to your house and do it, but my ped thinks it's better to have them done in the clinic incase she has a reaction, they make us stay 30 minutes after the shot just to make sure. I go into the clinic right before closing for a nurse visit (no copay) so at about 7:30pm and no one is there, (germ factor) then we just hang out watching tv.

NOTE.....Kylie always has a minor reaction days later, just a runny nose and little cough. When she had her glenn, she was in the hospital and I told the NP Annie, Kylie always has a reaction to the RSV. She received it the day after her glenn. Annie and the pharmacist swore she shouldn't and wouldn't have a reaction seeming it's not a live virus! Mom never knows best ;) SUPRISE!! Kylie had the reaction and the little boy next to us did to, so then they believed me. LOL

I think they are very worth the minor reaction though. Not to bad, I don't think it makes her leg hurt, but she does get a little bruise. Good Luck! Hope this helps.
