View Full Version : You've got to be kidding me!

I am going a little nuts here. My 8 year old has had a cough for over 3 weeks. We took her to the Pediatrician last week and he could hear rattling in her lungs. She was given antibiotics for walking pneumonia. That didn't make a difference so we took her back yesterday and she had a x-ray. Lungs looked good so now she is being treated for asthma.
But here is the kicker, the radiologist noted on her chart that it appears she has pulmonary stenosis. WHAT??? Are you kidding me? I just feel like I want to scream. She is spoused to be my healthy heart child. I am waiting to hear back about an appointment time for her echo.
Has anyone else had their non-CHD children's hearts checked?

Wow! I'm sorry! My 8 year old is my only "heart healthy" one but I remember the pediatrician hearing a murmur a few times when he was a toddler and got croup a lot. But he called it an "innocent flow" murmur and I haven't thought much of it since.
But I do have to take Kate and also my 5 year old son with the tiny VSD to cardiology in November to follow up so I will have to ask. Plus the perinatology appt is also in November. So why not get the 8 year old checked out too while i'm at it?!!! Sheesh.
I also have a niece who is 5 with pulmonary stenosis (she is my husbands step-brother's daughter so no blood relation). She was diagnosed with it at birth along with asd and vsd. The holes have closed and the stenosis is very minor. You will have to let us know what they find.

There are times I have wondered about getting my other children's hearts checked. And even wonderd if I should get my heart checked (when I was a baby my pediatrician told my mom I had a murmur but that was all that was ever said until a nurse heard a murmur on me when I was in labor with Dylan). Of course, wondering is as far as it's gone. Don't think I've even mentioned it to my husband at all. I have a 2 year old nephew who was recently diagnosed with pulmonary stenosis. His is really minor and goes back in a year to check again just to make sure things haven't changed.

Well, since we dont think that Kaidence's heart issue was from birth this may not apply. However, we did get the boys 7 years and 4 years echo's to check for anything abnormal. They wanted me to get it done when Kaidence was in the hospital in heart failure and it was just too much for me at that point. So last December I took both boys in and had full echo's done. Might I add that I was scared to death and had the sweaty hands that I get every time Kaidence gets an echo. Everything looked normal, but they suggested they come back every 5 years to get checked. I am not sure that I will do that again unless needed because it was much more money than I had expected. But if they think needs be, I will definalty get it done again. The peace of mind was worth every penny. Good Luck and keep us posted. Hopefully it just looked different because the x ray angle was off.

Thanks for the replies. Jade has an appointment this Thursday afternoon with Dr. Victoria Judd for a work-up and echocardiogram. I have never meet Dr. Judd but I am grateful we will be able to know for sure what is going on so quickly. If they do see any stenosis or anything else I will for sure be getting a echo for my 4 year-old too.

I love Dr. Judd, she is the one who diagnosed Noah in utero. She came after hours and opened the office just for us.
I am sorry to hear this about your daughter. I will keep my fingers crossed that everything turns out okay. I am always fearful that my other 2 children have some underline heart condition that we will find out about later.
Kids....they just NEVER stop making you worry!

Oh Yikes! I am sorry for the stress you are having to go through now Christina! All of this talk of future echos for subsequent pregnancies and healthy heart kiddos having subsequent heart problems, even if they are relatively minor makes me a little scared to ever have a second child! Do many in the group have multiples CHD kids?

Jade had her appointment yesterday with Dr Judd. Dr. Judd did say that in the x-ray it showed problems with the pulmonary artery. Jade had a ECG, was listen to and had a Echo. Everything came back sounding, looking and measuring normal! I am so thrilled. So it was just some shadow in the x-ray that appeared to be a problem.
I asked Jade what her favorite part of the appointment was and she said "When the doctor said there was nothing wrong with my heart." I totally agree.
Alli, I know we have some families in the group with relatives who also have CHD's. We have five in our immediate family (my son, his two grandmas, a cousin & an aunt) who all have CHDs.
