Four months ago, doctors discovered that he had been born with a congenital heart defect, which basically means he had a hole in his heart. He would have to go in for surgery as soon as possible, but he decided to delay the operation until after the qualifying events for nationals.

Once he had clinched the Rocky Mountain Region title and secured a spot at the College National Finals, Woolstenhulme was ready to go under the knife. "When they actually got in there, it was worse than they thought," he says. Doctors found a pocket with a blot clot in his heart that carried a substantial risk for an aneurysm. "I was pretty lucky to be alive."

A month after his heart surgery, he resumed practicing and preparing for the national competition.
